A Matter of Life and Death (1946) 104 minutes
“I love you June, you are life and I am leaving you”, says RAF pilot Peter (David Niven), to radio operator June, (Kim Hunter) as he prepares to bale out of his stricken plane without a parachute. Miraculously he survives the fall (thanks to a heavenly mix up in the “pea souper” fog). As heaven tries to rectify this mistake, Peter is forced to argue for his life in a celestial court…
Made in 1946, this film captures the zeitgeist of post war conversation, examining life, death and nationality. Romantic, surreal and poignantly funny, A Matter of Life and Death was named the second greatest British film ever made by the magazine Total Film in a poll of 25 film critics.

Reach for the Sky
(1956) 135 minutes
“His courage was not only an example to those in War but is now a source of inspiration to many in Peace”.
Reach for the Sky tells the inspiring true story of war hero Douglas Bader (Kenneth More), who, despite losing both his legs in a flying accident in 1931, went on to play a major role in the Battle of Britain. In 1941 Bader was detained as a POW following a collision with another plane over France. After several failed attempts at escape, he was sent to Colditz, where he remained until the end of the war. Perfectly capturing the spirit and determination to overcome disability, this film also follows the pattern of Britain's own struggle through adversity during the war. Reach for the Sky marked the start of distributing in this country by J. Arthur Rank.
(There will be a collection for local charities, About with Friends and Halsey House (Royal British Legion).
